What explanation does the unexplainable offer?
Life is full of the unexplainable. It is all around us. Mysteries in this life abound from fantastical creatures, unexplainable events, and interactions with the supernatural. The word "paranormal" is defined as "outside of the norm," but what is the norm? The word "supernatural" is easily broken down to mean events or experiences that are beyond what is common, every day experiences.
In a public survey, one may find that many people are open to the possibility of the existence of Bigfoot, aliens, or ghosts. In any social gathering, if one person tells a story of something spooky or unexplainable, that story will likely be followed by other personal experiences or second-hand stories of the uncanny. The truth is, most people believe in some form of the supernatural be that an afterlife, demonic or angelic activity, or the existence of legendary animals like the Chupacabra or Loch Ness Monster. It seems that we are so quick and even eager to entertain the possibility and existence of the mystic and the mysterious yet, as a culture, we are so hesitant to consider or admit the existence of God.
If it is true, and it is, that we are surrounded by the unexplainable, what evidence can the unexplainable offer us about God? What if every inexplicable event in this life serves as evidence for God's character, existence, and activity in our earthly realm? As a pastor and student of theology, it is my intention to explore what the unexplainable can teach us about God.
